In the science of Ayurveda, a sister science to Yoga, there are three constitutions (called doshas) that balance the world: Vata, Pitta and Kapha. Every individual is made up of various percentages of these three doshas. Pitta is ruled by the elements of fire and water (ie. steam), regulates all metabolic processes of the body including body temperature and hormones, and is particularly dominant during the season of Summer. The qualities that are typical of Pitta are hot, penetrating, fluid, and slightly oily.
When in balance, Pitta exudes clarity and purpose and is able to lead others towards manifesting a vision or accomplishing a goal. But, when Pitta is out of balance, we have anger, judgment, inflammation in the body and an extreme need to control.
On our yoga mats, excess Pitta looks like pushing ourselves beyond our healthy boundaries, extreme physicality and burnout. We can use our practice to balance Pitta by cultivating its opposite: cooling, fluid and gentle sequences that diffuse our intensity. In this practice, we will bring balance to our Pitta energy one cooling breath and posture at a time.
