In 2024, the Lake District National Park Authority granted planning permission for a major new adventure attraction at Elterwater Quarry in the Langdale Valley. Friends of the Lake District oppose the development.
The initial application was rejected on the grounds that the development would bring significant additional traffic into the Langdale Valley. As a result, the developers submitted a travel plan which aimed to set out how they would ensure people would not all come to the attraction in cars, clogging up the narrow roads and parking on Elterwater Common (which already suffers from illegally parked cars pulling up on the grass verges.)
We wanted to test out some of the proposals set out in the travel plan, and 9 April 2025 two members of staff from Friends of the Lake District took to the road. We parked at Brockhole on Windermere, and then took public transport from there to Elterwater. This is what happened...
