How to Sumo Deadlift with a Barbell
In this exercise tutorial, I teach you how to Do a Sumo Deadlift. I teach you the Deadlift techniques that I have learned over the years as a Certified USAPL Club Coach and Personal Trainer. In this Deadlift tutorial we go over proper sumo deadlift form, Do's, and Dont's of Sumo Deadlifting.
Let's start off by talking about what the deadlift works out.
Sumo deadlifts work out the Hamstrings, Glutes, and low back. All Deadlifts work out those same areas but the Sumo deadlift targets the Glutes and Quads more effectively than the Conventional Deadlift. While the Conventional Deadlift doesn't really workout your quadriceps or glutes as heavily as the Sumo Deadlift. I will be releasing a Conventional Deadlift Tutorial soon. I remember that I was a trainer I would focus heavily on Conventional Deadlifting, THis was back before I knew about the importance of rotating the kinds of deadlift that you do so that you can improve certain weakness and give certain muscles a break. In fact, I don't think I would have started doing them if I hadn't watched a couple of videos by Meg Squats, Dr, Mike Isratel and Chad Wesley Smith Explaining the importance of exercise variation. I also started Sumo Deadlifting because I keep feeling like my loq back was getting wrecked. It turns out that my body doesnt handle several consecutive training cycles of High Bar Squatting and Conventional deadlifting. So, when I finally started adding some variety to my deadlift programming I started to see changes and feel better.
So, if you're back is hurting or perhaps it feels overly fatigued then you migh consider checking your deadlift form and if that looks fine then I would strongly recommend that you try switching the the sumo deadlift for at least 2 consecutive training cycles.
