A two-minute snippet of Tom Hilverkus’ brilliant talk yesterday at Stoke Newington History Talks No. 24, about South Hornsey, which was a local authority from 1865 to 1900, administering three areas that were absorbed into the newly created Metropolitan Borough of Stoke Newington in 1900.
Originally part of the vast Hornsey parish, South Hornsey included the streets south of Allen Road and Brighton Road, half of Clissold Park, and the streets south of Finsbury Park. Its town hall was located at Milton Grove/Town Hall Approach, which is why the footpath is named “Town Hall Approach”—a name that often puzzles people, as the town hall was demolished in 1960.
The full recording, including slides, will be made available soon.
