1J46 Lymington Pier ➡ Brockenhurst | On-time
A video of a single lowering of the barriers at this level crossing on the short single-track branch line from Brockenhurst in the New Forest to Lymington Pier, where there is a connection with a ferry over to Yarmouth on the Isle of Wight. This is an early-evening clip taking advantage of the 'common' shot which showcases the traffic lights changing to red, and then goes close to the crossing to hear the oddly high-pitched alarm on this side. The train arrived much more quickly than expected after the barriers were lowered, likely at the point just as it was departing the short line's southern terminus.
As there is a signalled junction with a new-build housing estate close to one side of the crossing, it is actually linked in with the traffic lights. The pair on this side are positioned as they are to prevent queueing traffic blocking the crossing when a train is due. All lights are Siemens Helios LED variants, and as the barriers are lowered, an 'all red request' is given by the signaller controlling this crossing from Brockenhurst. The barriers can then be lowered once all lights for the main road are set to red. It wouldn't make sense having a green traffic light with a flashing red wigwag just a few metres in advance. Once the barriers are raised after the passage of a train, the lights can change back to green and work as they would. The strange board on this side is a rather odd solution to help with visibility of the lights themselves due to sun glare, and the alarms were added with the LED wigwags in around 2015-time, though one is already skipping a lot as can be heard.
