Did you know that what you eat not only directly impacts your physical body but your mental health as well?
Research is beginning to reveal more about the fascinating relationship between the brain and the gut. This relationship between the gut and the brain is referred to as the "gut-brain axis" or the "gut brain connection." To understand the gut brain axis, you must first familiarize yourself with the gut microbiome.
Your gut microbiome, or the ecosystem of microorganisms (bacteria, fungi, and viruses, etc) that live in your intestines, has a major impact on your digestion as well as your mood. The enteric nervous system (ENS), a network of neurons in the digestive system that controls digestion, is sometime called the "second brain" — not only does it influence digestive functions but it also produces high levels of serotonin and plays a roll in stress management.
