Healthy Oat Crisps Recipe
📝 Ingredients:
• 1 cup oat flour (made from rolled oats)
• 1/2 tsp baking powder
• 1/2 tsp salt
• Seasonings (1 tsp smoked/sweet paprika, 1/2 tsp garlic powder, 1/2 tsp onion powder, 1/4 tsp black pepper or chili flakes, or whatever seasonings you like)
• 2 tablespoons olive oil or coconut oil (substitute: ghee or melted butter)
• 2 large egg whites
• ¼ cup (or more) warm water (add 1 tbsp at a time as needed)
OPTIONAL SEASONINGS
• Pinch of turmeric powder (for color)
• 1 tsp nutritional yeast (for extra nutrition and a cheesy taste)
• 1 tsp ‘everything bagel seasoning’ (for extra flavor and crunch)
❃ PROCESS ❃
1. Preheat your oven to 170°C (338°F). Line a baking sheet with a silicone baking mat or parchment paper.
2. In a large bowl, whisk together the oat flour, baking powder, salt and seasonings. Make sure the spices are evenly distributed.
3. Add the wet ingredients one by one starting with egg whites and olive oil to the dry mixture, stirring until well combined. Gradually add warm water, one tablespoon at a time, mixing until the batter reaches a smooth, pipeable consistency. It should be similar to a thick pancake batter or a very soft dough—basically to be able to hold its shape but smooth enough to pipe easily.
4. Transfer the dough-batter to a piping bag fitted with a medium round tip (or a plastic bag with a small corner snipped off). Or if you don’t have a piping bag, you may directly portion out and spoon the dough/batter onto the baking tray. Piping provides a more even and mess-free result, but both methods work well. Pipe small rounds (about 1 inch in diameter) onto the lined baking sheet, spacing them slightly apart. The smaller the better so that they crisp up better. Place a small piece of parchment paper over each round and gently press with the bottom of a cup to flatten them evenly.
5. Bake the crisps in your preheated oven for 16-20 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy around the edges. Keep an eye on them to avoid over-browning.
6. Let the crisps cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely. They will become crispier as they cool.
