On 17 June 1876, along Rosebud Creek in Montana Territory, Brigadier General George Crook’s column met a force of Lakota Oyate and Tsitsistas Cheyenne warriors determined to protect their great village and homelands. This documentary follows the Battle of the Rosebud from treaty promises and Black Hills gold to the three column United States campaign that set the stage for the Great Sioux War of 1876.
Through army reports, Native narratives, and modern scholarship, we trace Crook’s march from Fort Fetterman, the role of Crow and Shoshone allies, and the night ride of Lakota and Northern Cheyenne warriors who chose to strike first. Across six hours of broken country fighting, the battle checked Crook’s advance and reshaped the path to the Little Bighorn eight days later.
We examine contested casualty figures, competing claims of victory, and the Cheyenne memory of The Battle Where the Girl Saved Her Brother. Finally, we follow the aftermath into reservation policy, land loss, and today’s commemorations at Rosebud Battlefield State Park.
This is a grounded, evidence based look at how Lakota and Cheyenne victory at the Rosebud changed the summer of 1876.
