In the late 19th century the mill was taken over by Joseph, William, and Elon Crowther, and the company John Crowther and Sons was formed. The Company was named after their late father John Crowther, who was a woolen manufacturer from Golcar, West Yorkshire.

Around the 20th century, the smaller mills at Bank Bottom closed and were gradually replaced by five bigger companies. These were New Mill, Clough Lea Mill, Cellar’s Clough Mill, and Holme Mills.

With business booming during 1914-18 thanks to the first world war, there was a huge demand for woolen cloth for military purposes.

In 1936, it was reported to have 260 looms and 32 carding machines. In more recent times, The Colne Valley Spinning Co. produced carpets from 1962 until 2002. The company, along with most of the Crowther family’s former business empire is now taken care of by a shell company called JEC Holdings and this mill closed its doors in 2002.
