Following our daytime visit to the Wuling Congtai, we revisited it the evening before leaving Handan. The evening Congtai was a stark contrast to its daytime, rustic elegance; it was adorned with modern, colorful lights, adding vibrant hues to the night sky.
Congtai, also known as Wuling Congtai, is an important historical site, cultural landmark, and recreational park in the area, and a symbol of the ancient city of Handan. Legend has it that it was first built during the reign of King Wuling of Zhao (325 BC – 299 BC) in the Warring States period as a complex of high platforms used for military reviews and entertainment.
For centuries, many historical figures have ascended the platform to reflect on the past, composing poems and expressing their feelings. The Tang Dynasty poet Cen Shen visited Handan and Congtai, but by then it had long been abandoned, a fact that saddened him greatly, prompting him to write "Song of the Inn in Handan."
"A traveler from Chang'an rode his horse along the road to Handan. Sorrowfully, beneath the Congtai Terrace, a stretch of overgrown weeds grew. The inn's door faced the Zhang River, where fishing boats were moored under the weeping willows. Handan girls sold wine at night,
boasting of counting their money by lamplight to their guests. Drunk and intoxicated at midday, they sang a wild song and fell asleep by the wine shop." More than a thousand years later, Congtai Park has renovated or reconstructed Congtai Terrace, along with other historical sites such as the Wangzhu Pavilion, the Seven Sages Shrine, and the Handan Stele Forest. Pavilions, bridges, and gardens blend seamlessly with the cultural landscape, making this historically significant site a must-see for visitors to Handan.
