The only place in Florida you can experience wild-roaming bison is Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park in Micanopy. This State Park became Florida's first preserve in 1971 with 22,000 acres of wet and dry savannah. A small herd of 10 bison from Oklahoma were introduced in 1975 to restore the prairie to what it would have looked like in the 1700s before they were hunted to near extinction. Now, the herd has grown to over 50. I watched the movements and interactions of a couple dozen, but others might have been "hiding" in the tall grasses and knee-high in muddy water. See how they eat palmetto leaves, scratch an itch, pull themselves out of the water, and lift their 1,000+ lb bodies to a standing position after resting on their sides. I am truly awed by their amazing grace and grateful "tatanka" still roam free in Florida.
