Nicht schnell und sehr markiert, Sketch No. 1 in C minor, from 'Vier Skizzen' Op. 58 by Robert Schumann performed by Ben Bloor on the 25 stop 1878 Father Willis organ of All Saints' Church, Hastings in a live recital on Monday 22nd July 2024.
A curious instrument, the pedal piano is a piano with an attached organ-style pedalboard. Few composers have specifically written pieces for it including Liszt, Gounod and Saint-Saëns. The Schumann family acquired one for their Leipzig home in order to practice organ works, and Robert warmed to it so much that he wrote a number of works for it, among them, the four Sketches, or Skizzen. All four are in ternary form and they make up some of the lighter music of Schumann’s keyboard output.
