What is painting skill?

It’s not about resemblance—
It’s about making every line obey the mechanics of your heart and the distribution of your soul.
The truth of painting is not a style.
It is what the artist dares to risk.

Tear off the label.
Abolish the academy.
Raise your hand.
Dissect the master.
That is truth.

Sometimes I argue.
Sometimes I get lazy.
But the purity of love never changes.
I spend most of my time in discomfort, yet I paint peace and beauty.
That, too, is love.

Today’s base is Qianbai and Napoleon Yellow, with a bit of black—like a mosquito bite—
To create the underpainting.
When mixed with charcoal, it becomes a soft gray, and structure begins to emerge.
I’ll paint this one the French way.

What is art?

I don’t know.
Many people speak of it with logic and authority.
But most of it is nonsense.
I only know one thing:
Paint every day. That is right.

I paint figuratively, not photorealistically.
I’ve seen too much Baroque, Rococo, Renaissance, Neoclassicism—
All too constrained. Too superficial.

The base doesn’t need detail,
But the structure must be strong.
Light, value, saturation must correspond.
Painting is not about showing off, taking photos, or posturing.
Likeness does not equal value.

A true painting has structure.
It has light and shadow.
It has life.

I’ve run a studio for 35 years.
I arrive two hours early, polish my shoes, iron my clothes, take a shower.
I respect this profession.

But how can teachers teach well if they’re careless, or students come late?
What I teach can’t be learned in school.
I built it through 20 years in Europe,
Photographing 65 museums,
Developing my own methods.

When painting a portrait or sculpture,
Every stroke prepares for the next.
Ears, beard, hair—every part must be understood and placed with intention.

From this place, I worked stroke by stroke.
Thousands of sketches.
And I created my own method: O.S.P.
