BAYHAM OLD ABBEY | From HOLY Ground to HAUNTED Ruin

Bayham Old Abbey, located near Lamberhurst on the Kent and Sussex border, is a hauntingly beautiful monastic ruin nestled in a peaceful, wooded valley. Founded in the late 12th century by Premonstratensian canons—also known as White Canons—the abbey was formed by merging two smaller local communities.

Over the next few centuries, Bayham flourished as a religious and agricultural centre, with the canons living a life of prayer, study, and pastoral work under a strict monastic rule.

Following the Dissolution of the Monasteries under Henry VIII in the 1530s, Bayham was abandoned and gradually fell into ruin. Yet the remains are striking, with fragments of the abbey church, cloisters, and chapter house still standing, offering a powerful sense of medieval devotion and decay.

In the 18th and 19th centuries, the site became a romantic landscape feature in the grounds of Bayham Abbey House.
