In this video, I discuss the reality of building the “ultimate performance profile.” Being as strong as possible, as fast as possible, as mobile as possible… it sounds amazing on paper but of course there are a lot of barriers.
And we see this when we try to quantify progress across multiple disciplines. Could you give someone a score for their general athleticism and performance and have it reflective of their overall ability? Like a real life version of the Power Levels from Dragon Ball?
Again, the very concept is flawed. Such a score would need to contain so much nuance and still wouldn’t be predictive in any useful sense.
When training for this overall power score, we likewise run into trouble.
For example: how do you balance these skills? Both in terms of your training (there are only so many hours in the day) and in terms of competing skills. There’s only so much muscle you can build before it starts to affect your endurance and mobility, for example.
This problem is called “The Pareto Frontier” in engineering. In this video, I explain these challenges in depth and discuss how we can similarly use an engineering approach in order to design our optimal performance profile. One that balances multiple objectives in service of our specific goals.
