Due to a number of factors, the muscles at the shoulder that do internal rotation are stronger than the muscles that do external rotation. One factor is that our lifestyle is structured so that many activities have us doing forward motions. This can include driving and typing on a keyboard. Also, many machines in the gym emphasize a forward motion. These factors combined with your body's anatomy can allow a muscle imbalance to develop.

Among the shoulder external rotators that you want to strengthen, there are 3 muscles. They include the Teres Minor, Posterior Deltoid, and the Infraspinatus. The rear delt can be strengthened by doing things like face pulls and the reverse chest fly. The rotator cuff muscles can be strengthened by standing next to a cable column and doing external rotation with your elbow at the side of your body.

By strengthening the external rotator muscles, you can help to correct the above issue and improve your posture and the alignment of your body.
