Today's quiet walking tour is one of the types I prefer to do when the summer temperatures get up there. One under a canopy of trees with as little time as possible baking on a peak 😄
We'll be starting on Hobson Moor Road, on the border of Mottram and Stalybridge, in Tameside, Manchester. It's a nice place to start from as you can leave your car on this nice quiet lane, which is perfect even if you want to just take in some views over the Peak District in the distance, then drive home again. But unless you're going up to Wild Bank Hill, then it's more of a sunrise spot than a sunset one. Not that it doesn't look lovely all day!
I've done many a wander in this area, and cycle. It's another spot where you can choose your own adventure. You catch some peaks and bag a trig, or stay low and take in some lanes and rivers.

On this occasion, we'll be doing a fairly linear there-and-back job. But with some slight changes on the way back, but parallel to the way we came.
So it's straight down Hobson Moor Road, passing through the old farm houses and horse stables. These lanes keep us under a canopy of lovely green, and wind in the leaves sound.
We'll pass the old site of Hollingworth Hall, long gone now I'm afraid, but the gateway you'll see here is said to be from the original building, before the farm took over its place entirely. Once the track starts to turn into mud and gravel, we'll be coming out into some of the scenic views down towards Tintwistle and Longdendale. The last few trees here are huge and make some nice views to pass underneath.
The sun starts to come out now just in time to get to Lees Hill. After a quick panorama or two, we'll wander up by the very old drystone walls, onto the 'peak' where we get more excellent views. To the North East and East, we get the Upper & Lower Swineshaw Reservoirs. As well as Harridge Pike and Irontongue Hill, which would run you over to Dovestone Reservoir and Wimberry Rocks (Indian's Head). to the North West and West it's all Longdendale! With Arnfield Moor, Tintwistle Low Moor, Tintwistle Knarr and beyond.
After a brief look around, we can hike down the opposite side of Lees Hill and follow the pylons for a bit, along the Pennine Bridleway. But soon we're zipping off into another gnarly field of old drystone walls and undulating ancient pathways. There's not much to describe from this point, other than the lush views over ferns and trees towards Arnfield Reservoir, and the Dark Peak area of Bleaklow and Kinder on the horizon.
One terrifying grouse bursting out of the ferns, and a few fields later, we re-join Hobson Moor Road, for one last look at the old houses before we get back to where we started. A nice spot to finish with those views again.

For another walk you might like, very nearby to this one, try my other video 'Brushes Valley Reservoirs and Moors'. Featuring a closer walk around the reservoirs you see here from the top of Lees Hill:
