Lukla Airport (Tenzing–Hillary Airport) is a small airport located in Lukla, Solukhumbu District, eastern Nepal, at an elevation of about 2,845 meters (9,334 feet) above sea level. It serves as the main gateway to the Everest region, especially for trekkers heading to Everest Base Camp.
Built in 1964 under the supervision of Sir Edmund Hillary, Lukla Airport is crucial for tourism and supplies in the remote Khumbu region. It is often called one of the most dangerous airports in the world due to its short 527-meter (1,729 ft) runway, steep terrain, and dramatic drop-off at one end.
Lukla’s weather is highly unpredictable, with frequent fog, clouds, strong winds, and sudden rain or snow, especially in the monsoon and winter months. Flights are often delayed or canceled due to poor visibility and shifting mountain winds.
