The Swan-Canning Estuary lies at the heart of Perth and has a rich and complex story.
Since 2019, TNC has been working with amazing partners to restore the diverse marine ecosystem of the estuary and in 2022 completed the construction of 24 individual shellfish reefs across 6 hectares in the lower Swan-Canning Estuary at four locations as part of the Reef Builder program.
One of the most exciting things about this project delivery, was not only the support and partnership, but the ambition and delivery at scale that has had positive impacts on the entire waterway. The reefs are maintaining significant ecological diversity and function with fish abundance and overall species diversity. But it doesn’t stop here - there is a monitoring and maintenance plan to continue to steward the reefs into the future.
