Everywhere in the world, families struggle with communication. In the U.S., in the middle of a global pandemic and a FIERCE election cycle, it is not surprising that folks have disowned certain family members while "avoiding" others with whom they may disagree. Sometimes, we assume that our family members think the same way we do and it can be jarring to find out when values simply don't line up. Talking to loved ones who disagree on strongly held values can be painful. Nevertheless, humans have to be able to communicate effectively with one another. As a clinical psychologist, I know the value of effectively asking someone about their beliefs and being able to work through disagreements to come to some understanding. In this video, I shed light on first, finding out where members of your family stand and second, how to (maybe) land on common ground.
