On Thursday, November 6, 2025, Joseph Heitman, MD, PhD, was honored with a Distinguished Faculty Award from the Duke Medical Alumni Association during a special ceremony on the opening night of Duke's annual Medical Alumni Weekend.
Dr. Heitman, the James B. Duke Professor and chair of the Department of Molecular Genetics and Microbiology at Duke University, is recognized globally as a leader in molecular fungal pathogenesis, authoring more than 500 publications that have advanced our understanding of these critical organisms.
Beyond his research, he has mentored over 70 scientists, many now leading their own laboratories. His commitment to training the next generation of researchers exemplifies Duke’s culture of discovery and innovation.
In 2024, he was elected to the National Academy of Medicine — a fitting recognition of his profound impact on the field.
