Otokomi Lake and Otokomi Mountain were named by George Bird Grinnell who was an early explorer of the Glacier area. He named many features in Glacier including the famous Grinnell Glacier. Otokomi (which means "yellow fish") was the name of his Blackfeet hunting partner.
The trail to Otokomi Lake in Glacier is one where you can find solitude even in the height of the busy season. The Rose Creek trail starts at Rising Sun just off the Going-To-The-Sun Road on the east side of the park. The roughly 11 mile hike affords great views most of the way as the 2015 fire cleared a good amount of tree cover along the trail. Numerous waterfalls are close at hand as the trail follows the Rose Creek drainage up to Otokomi Lake.
