Paul Asay’s son Colin struggles with depression. After Colin overdosed on cold medicine and ibuprofen a couple years ago, Paul realized he’d never shared his own depression and anxiety struggles with his son. In his new book published by Focus on the Family, Paul opens up about depression and shines a light on the complicated signs, including feelings of sorrow, irritation, guilt, and worthlessness; fatigue and insomnia; changes in appetite and interests; trouble concentrating or thinking clearly; and even suicidal thoughts.
In this interview, he shares about his personal struggle with depression and how he learned to manage his depression. A friend encouraged him to start jogging, which led to Paul running major races and marathons. He suggests looking out, not in, forward, not back, up, not down. In terms of faith, he encourages prayer, giving, going to church, and seeking out the “thin” places (where the veil between heaven and earth is thin). He also speaks highly of counseling (and medication, if necessary). Paul’s experience with anxiety and depression will resonate with our listeners who either experience this themselves or know someone who does. It’s a beautiful, compassionate look at dealing with this mental burden.
