Certain combinations of genetic variations contribute to particular diseases, but figuring out which combinations cause which diseases is a mind-boggling puzzle. Markus Hoffman, a former postdoctoral research fellow in the Intramural Research Program at the National Institutes of Health, used cutting-edge ‘quantum’ computing technology to put that puzzle together. With the help of the most powerful computers on Earth, he helped his lab make discoveries that will advance our understanding of a wide array of illnesses.
