Today we explore the wild northwest coast of Gran Canaria, in the municipality of Gáldar, far away from the busy tourist resorts of the south. This part of the island reveals a raw and authentic landscape shaped by volcanic rock, powerful Atlantic waves, and centuries of history.

Our journey begins as we drive through vast banana plantations, a reminder of how deeply agriculture is woven into life in northern Gran Canaria. Narrow roads guide us toward the coast, where the land suddenly opens up to dramatic ocean views.

At Punta de Gáldar, the island meets the Atlantic with force. Dark basalt cliffs, rugged rock platforms, and natural pools carved by the sea create a landscape that feels untamed and timeless. The sound of crashing waves dominates the atmosphere, and the horizon stretches endlessly to the north. This is a place where nature still sets the rules.

Following a quiet coastal road, we continue toward Caleta de Abajo, a small and wild coastal enclave tucked beneath steep cliffs. Here, life slows down. Modest houses sit close to the sea, natural pools fill and empty with the tides, and the ocean dictates the rhythm of daily life. Caleta de Abajo reflects the traditional fishing culture that once defined much of Gran Canaria’s north coast.

Along the way, we also encounter traces of 20th-century coastal defence bunkers, silent witnesses to a time when the Canary Islands were fortified due to their strategic position in the Atlantic. These structures blend into the volcanic landscape, adding another historical layer to this already powerful coastline.

On our way back, we walk through parts of Punta de Gáldar, passing local sports fields and old banana plantations, where torn leaves and weathered paths tell stories of agricultural life shaped by wind, salt, and time.
