Hello friends. In this video we will take a look at the Lehigh Coal and Navigation Companies lock 30. The LCN or “Lehigh Canal” was first opened in 1829 and ran from White Haven PA to Easton PA.
This lock was the exit lock for section 4 of the lower Lehigh Canal. Section 4 begins at Triechlers dam about a mile or so to the north of this lock.
Also highlighted in this video is a retaining wall built by the Lehigh and Susquehanna railroad. This railroad was a subsidiary of the Lehigh Coal and Navigation Company. The original construction dates back to the 1830s, however not this far south. The original Lehigh and Susquehanna was built for hauling anthracite in the White Haven area. After severe flooding in the 1860s destroyed the upper canal, White Haven to Jim Thorpe, the LCN opted not to rebuild the upper section of canal but instead lengthened the Lehigh and Susquehanna all the way to Easton.
The Lehigh and Susquehanna would be leased to the Central Railroad of New Jersey in the 1870s and it would be their mainline for almost a century. Our next project will highlight a branch of the Lehigh and New England railroad. Thank you for watching. 5/10/25
