‘सिकल’ या इंग्रजी शब्दाचा अर्थ म्हणजे गवत कापण्याचा विळा किंवा कोयता. ‘सिकल सेल अ‍ॅनिमिया’ हा लाल रक्तपेशींमधील दोषामुळे होणारा आजार आहे. ज्या रुग्णांना सिकल सेल हा आजार झालेला आहे त्यांच्या लाल रक्तपेशी या विळ्यासारख्या आकाराच्या,वेडय़ावाकडय़ा पद्धतीने दिसतात. यालाच ‘सिकलिंग गुणधर्म’ असे म्हणतात. सिकल सेल रुग्णाच्या पेशींमधल्या ‘हिमोग्लोबिन’ प्रथिनात दोष आढळून आल्यास त्याला ‘सिकलिंग हिमोग्लोबिन’ अस म्हणलं जात. या प्रकारच्या हिमोग्लोबिनमुळे लाल रक्तपेशींचे आयुष्य कमी होते आणि त्या लवकर फुटतात. त्यामुळे रक्ताचे प्रमाण कमी होते आणि याच अवस्थेला ‘अ‍ॅनिमिया’ असं म्हणतात. आणि म्हणूनच त्यामुळे या आजाराला ‘सिकल सेल अ‍ॅनिमिया’ असे नाव पडले.

The English word ‘sickle’ means hay or sickle. Sickle cell anemia is a disease caused by a defect in red blood cells. Patients with sickle cell disease have red blood cells that look like a spider's web. This is called 'sickling property'. If a defect is found in the hemoglobin protein in a sickle cell patient's cell, it is called 'sickling hemoglobin'. This type of hemoglobin shortens the life of red blood cells and causes them to rupture faster. This causes a decrease in the amount of blood and this condition is called 'anemia'. This is why the disease is called 'sickle cell anemia'.
