Hyundai and Kia 2.4L Engines are failing like the plague out there and its a culmination of a manufacturing defect and owner neglect.
Manufacturer oil change intervals are between 7000-12,000miles which are far between, causing the engine to build up sludge and carbon deposits. Combine that with manufacturing deficiencies which left debris in the engine block during manufacturing, abrasive particles circulate the oil lubrication system which take their toll on bearing surfaces. They also clog passages, starving critical bearing surfaces with oil. These eventually cause the catastrophic detriment to these engines.
While Hyundai and Kia attempted a cover up to extend the warranty, yet they still suffer from these failures many years later and are generally to be avoided. If you own one, make sure it is full of oil and not burning it like many do.
This engine was out of a 2013 Kia Optima with 130,000km before wearing down the main bearing surfaces causing it to completely seize up.
