Teej Festival: Ecology & Devotion
The Teej festival is deeply connected to nature and seasonal rhythms. Celebrated with the arrival of the monsoon, it coincides with the blooming of rare flowers like Kalihari, Fulhera, and Kaans Phul that adorn the forest fringes and farms. Traditional practices include using the special datoon of chirchita, and preparing seven varieties of pulses enjoyed with taro root leaves a day before, reflecting the preservation of traditional seeds and the rich gastronomical heritage of local food. Beyond rituals, Teej embodies a philosophy of cleansing — fasting during this time is seen as a way to purify the body, mind, and soul.
Teej is a Hindu festival primarily dedicated to Hindu deities - the mother goddess Parvati and Shiva. Teej literally means the "third," denoting the third day after the new moon when the monsoon begins as per the Hindu calendar. Therefore, it is also celebrated to welcome the arrival of the monsoon season with singing, swings, dancing, enjoyment, prayer rituals, and often fasting. "Teej" is a generic name referring to the three types of Teej festivals - Hariyali Teej, Kajari Teej, and Hartalika Teej.
