The fourth tower of the YCRA outing to Bristol.
St Philip and St Jacob, also known as Pip and Jay have a 19cwt peal of eight bells. They are mostly cast by Thomas I Bilbie in 1739 except the sixth and tenor which were cast in 1895 and 1914 by Llewellins and James. The bells have a rather rustic and bangy sound, but have lots of character and hum to match where they are.
The bells go quite well and are very easy to ring. The tenor has a wooden shafted clapper made by Phillip Pratt (Avon Ropes) and makes the tenor sound rather good even though it's a crap bell! The ringing room has a rather warmth feeling to it and almost feels like your in the hall at home. That said, Ringer Jack nearly set off the burglar alarm which nearly caused panic for all of us! I rather enjoyed ringing here as the bells have lots of character beneath them.
Here is a plain course of Stedman Triples conducted by Anna Sherwood. Enjoy!
