Benjamin Verdery (b. 1955)
"the rain falls equally on all things" is a solo fantasy inspired by Schubert's famous art song, Nachtstück. Ben composed this competition for the Changsha International Guitar Festival (China).
This work opens with a mixed texture of percussive sounds, harmonics, and bluesy interjections, The main motivic material emerges from this passage. It wanders through many guises, key centers, and characters. This draws the listener into the guitar's subtle resonance by diffusing into ethereal arpeggios. A "rain drop" passage employs pizzicato and glissando and repeated pitches.
