Andrew Wyeth is a famous American artist specializing in realistic paintings of people and landscapes. Figurative paintings are popular in the post-war period dominated by abstraction. While his work is considered melancholic, the artist prefers to consider it attentive. "I just think like that, whether it's contemplative, silent, whether it's a lonely person, people will always have a sense of sadness," he says. The self-taught painter sparked controversy in the 1980s with Helga Pictures, a series of over 200 works that included nudes of a German housekeeper who would later become his assistant.
