One year ago, Hurricane Helene unleashed devestation on Yancey County, NC—ripping homes from foundations, swallowing roads, and claiming lives we still mourn. I rode shotgun with Sheriff Shane Hilliard with Yancey County Sheriff's Office shortly after this happened. A couple of weeks ago I rode with Sheriff Hilliard again, patrolling the scars that time hasn't fully healed to see how things looked one year later.
We crossed newly rebuilt bridges now sturdy sentinels where floodwaters raged. Families waved from porches of homes pieced back together through sheer grit and community sweat—97% of state roads open. Resilience? It's etched in these mountains.
But the ride revealed raw edges: Empty lots where trailers vanished, and homes still unrepaired. "We've come far," Sheriff Hilliard said, with his eyes on the road as we drove "but will still need help and funding to get back to as close to normal as we can.'
Yancey Strong isn't a slogan; it's survival. If you can help financially or can volunteer to help there are orgs still working in Yancey County like Rebuilding Hollers - Come Hell or High Waters and Samaritan's Purse helping people in the recovery process. Let's flood them with support, not water. 💧🔨❤️
