James Kalm, as a relief from the sweltering summer studio, often pedals through the Lower East Side late in the evenings. Recently, on his way up Orchard Street, he’d glimpsed a Rouault painting in the window at Shin, but was unaware of the historic mini retrospective of this extraordinary painter. Just days before the closing of this exhibition, he visits the gallery to capture some video of this event. However, during this tour he’s informed that the third gallery of paintings was closed, due to a leakage problem. Returning two days later, on the final Saturday of the show, your correspondent captures footage of the final gallery for viewers.
Georges Rouault (1871-1958) was a unique talent grouped along with Henri Matisse, André Derain, and Maurice de Vlaminck as a foundational Fauve. However, his sensibility might link him also to the late symbolists and his teacher Gustave Moreau. Known for his religious expressionist paintings, some that he labored on for decades to achieve a quality of luminesce, Rouault is a singular talent in the pantheon of early French Modernists. This exhibition is in collaboration with Skarstedt Gallery. This program was recorded July 10, and 12, 2025. #jameskalmreport #jameskalmroughcut #lorenmunk
