Species with strong natural defenses, such as camouflage or venom, tend to have smaller brains, while those without such protections rely on awareness, quick thinking, and memory to survive. By comparing brain size to body size through the Encephalization Index, scientists have uncovered how life on the reef has shaped a remarkable diversity of behaviors — from the stealth of the moray eel to the strategic, territorial nature of the brown surgeonfish.
