PianoDisc Power Supply Model 8000-00009 was not turning on and this video documents the steps performed to troubleshoot and resolve the problem.
The fix required finding and replacing bad electrolytic capacitors. ESR (Equivalent Series Resistance) testing was performed in circuit using an ESR meter to identify potentially bad capacitors. Since testing capacitors in circuit can give false positives (due to other resistors/capacitors in the circuit), only the suspected bad capacitors with high ESR were removed and retested out of circuit again with the ESR and multi-meter.
Two 820 uF (C7 and C12), two 220 uF (C11 and C26), and two 1000 uF (C33 and C35) were replaced to resolve the issue.
Caution: Capacitors in power supplies can be very dangerous and extreme caution should be taken not to touch or test the capacitors until all they have been properly discharged. I use a 10 ohm resister and insulated pliers to bridge the positive and negative ends of each capacitor on the back of the board to ensure any residual charge has been removed.
