ENDOMETRIOSIS BOWEL SURGERY RISKS!
What I learnt from my private consultations with 2 highly recommended endometriosis specialists and a colorectal specialist.
Bowel surgery is risky. The NHS tells us all of the time and throws stoma in our face as a deterrent.
But what I learnt from my consultation appointments was pretty eye-opening.
In most cases (and therefore not referencing to
"unique" or "exceptional" or "truly severe" cases) the risk of stoma is less than 1%.
The risk of stoma typically increases when endometriosis lesions or nodules are located lower down on the bowel - the rectosigmoid colon / rectum area.
This is due to the fact that the LOWEST point of the bowel experiences the HIGHEST pressure - where you effectively evacuate your bowels - do a poo!
In cases where a resection is required, the risk of rupture is too high - therefore, a STOMA is a VERY likely outcome.
Another risk of bowel surgery is BOWEL FISTULA.
This is where the bowel makes a CONNECTION with another organ. Watch the full video to get the full experience of what it can mean if the bowel connects with the VAGINA!!
Apologies for the artwork!
