In SectionTwo of the Grounding for the Metaphysics of Morals, Kant makes a number of critical distinctions that help develop his moral philosophy: rational love vs. pathological love, moral interest vs. pathological interest, categorical imperative vs. hypothetical imperative, freedom vs. nature, self-determination vs. determination through alien causes, absolute value vs. relative value, persons vs. things, objective ends vs. subjective, ends in themselves vs. means to an end, dignity vs. price, autonomy of the will vs. heteronomy of the will, etc. Kant works through with astonishing brilliance how and why the categorical imperative must be demonstrable a priori (i.e., as necessary and as strictly universal) morality is to be possible at all.
