Section 3 is the most difficult part of the Grounding. In it, Kant explores the two standpoints from which the human being must be regarded by developing the distinction between appearances and things in themselves, terms that he takes from Plato in order to distinguish his own philosophy, where the human being is an end in himself, from the philosophy of Plato and ancient Greek teleology, where the human being is a means to an end.
