It is over a hundred-and-seventy years since a tunnel
under the Channel between England and France was
suggested. Since then, various plans have been
rejcted. But in 1973, Britain and France agreed a joint
scheme to link Britain into Europe with a "Chunnel".
That was before inflation and the energy crisis took its
toll. In 1975, Britain exercised its option to withdraw
from the project, leaving compensation bills to be met
and a scar on the landscape near Dover in England
and at Sangatte in France. This report looks at some
of the history of the tunnel, work under way on both
sides and at the effects of the abandonment.
