Online romance fraud can be committed from anywhere in the world.
Here are some red flags to look out for. Share far and wide to help us “banish” those who wish to cause online harm.

• Moving your chat from a trusted website that keeps records, to an unmonitored platform.
• Early declarations of love or marriage proposals.
• Requests for money to help someone out, especially if you have never met in person.
• Tales which pull at heartstrings to earn sympathy or threats they will harm themselves if they do not receive money.
• Cancelling plans or avoiding speaking to you face to face, either in person or on the phone.
Fall for the person, not the profile when it comes to starting an online relationship.
Thanks to BBC’s “The Traitors” for the inspiration. It may be a game but it helps remind us of the need to apply caution when striking up new relationships with people we’ve never met.
There's no shame in being deceived by a Traitor. Plenty have because sadly most Traitors are better at covering their tracks than Peter was. But if you have been a fraud victim make sure to report it to Action Fraud online or on 0300 123 2040.
