May 1995 was a turning point on MTV Europe: dancefloor anthems, grunge power, sensual ballads and unexpected chart climbers shared the spotlight in one of the most iconic months of the mid-90s.
We kick off with a blast of Eurodance and club energy: U96 kept the rave spirit alive at #20 with “Club Bizarre”, while Haddaway soared in at #19 asking us to “Fly Away.” The unforgettable Faith No More brought rock grit with “Digging The Grave”, just ahead of Bruce Springsteen’s elegant and emotional “Secret Garden.”
The R&B wave made a smooth entrance this month with Brownstone debuting at #14 with their silky “If You Love Me.” Just above, Green Day held strong at #13 with “Basket Case,” a 90s anthem that defined a generation. The dancefloor didn’t stop: The Bucketheads dropped a house music bomb (literally!) at #12 with “The Bomb! (These Sounds Fall Into My Mind)”, while Captain Hollywood Project searched for love at #11 with “Find Another Way.”
The top 10 brings us iconic grooves and heartfelt melodies: Freak Power’s acid jazz jam “Turn On, Tune In, Cop Out” grooved at #10, while Scatman John kept the world scat-singing at #9. Ballads bloomed with Wet Wet Wet’s gentle “Julia Says” at #8 and Nightcrawlers set clubs ablaze at #7 with the deep-house classic “Push The Feeling On.”
The unstoppable rise of La Bouche’s “Be My Lover” continued at #6, followed closely by the ever-poignant The Connells and their timeless “'74-‘75” at #5. Janet Jackson bounced up the list with “Whoops Now” reaching #4, while The Offspring proved punk was alive and well at #3 with “Self Esteem.”
And then, two giants face off at the very top. At #2, Bryan Adams delivered one of his most passionate ballads with “Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman?”, a sweeping flamenco-infused love song taken from the Don Juan DeMarco soundtrack. But it’s Take That who take the crown this month: the British pop kings hit #1 with the timeless “Back For Good”, a heartfelt anthem of regret and longing that became one of their most successful songs worldwide.
