Many years ago, a visit to the pub inevitably meant drinking pints of luke warm tap water type beer or blizzard cold tasteless lager.
Granted, it was a HELL of a lot cheaper back then (I just read a post that said a pub was selling an American beer for.... £75 a pint!) but it really was... piss water!
Nowadays, not only is there SO much choice when it comes to beer but there are some truly exceptional brews out there and I can afford (just!) to be a little more discerning!
It was with that (and pub prices!) in mind that I invested in a couple of PerfectDraft beer dispensers (and two Krups Subs too) and, up until now, had primarily stuck to strong/continental beers in the main (I have had a few others such as London Pride and Old Speckled Hen (I don't really like the 'hoppy' beers myself) and so it was with some trepidation that I tried a keg of Theakston's Old Peculiar (I had tried a pint when I was young but not for many years) and, to my very pleasant surprise...
I ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT!
At 5.8%, it was reasonably strong (although, as I am ueed to drinking a lot stronger (8%+ and upwards (right up to 75% believe it or not), I considered it more of a session beer to be honest!) but, more importantly, it was very, very...... drinkable!
Dark, slightly sweet with a gentle after taste it was also very easy to pour too (some PerfectDraft kegs can by somewhat... lively!) and I found it difficult to... stop drinking it (It lasted a couple of days but, thankfully, there's plenty more where that came from (new stock now ordered!).
