The chamber was lined with wood, its walls broken into irregular recesses where candles burned or went dark without pattern, light shifting as if attention itself were being redirected. Called the Chime Box, the space was tuned for sound, every surface bending it just enough to mislead, while from the ceiling hung crystal chimes seventy to a hundred feet long, formed from a clear mineral that caught light without reflecting it, nearly invisible until they moved. Their tones paired with distant light to suggest guidance while one wandered without aim, but the moment intent sharpened the sound shifted and the candles followed, drawing movement away from something unseen. On rare occasions every flame extinguished at once and the crystal fell silent mid-note, and when the light returned those still inside stood somewhere they did not remember reaching, with no echo left to explain how they arrived.
