This video shows you the beautiful views of Ullswater in the Lake District. Is this classed as fell running? because you never actually summit a fell on the Ullswater Way. Should I have classed it as normal trail running? Let me know what you think.
What did I do?... I ran and hiked the whole of the Ullswater Way (Lake District) lower level route in one go. I call it fastpacking or fasthiking. It is a combination of trail running, hiking, and walking. I started off at Glencoyne and did the Ullswater Way anticlockwise. So it went: Glencoyne, Glenridding, Side Farm, Howtown, Pooley Bridge, Waterfoot, The Quiet Site, Aira Force, and back to Glencoyne to dip my toes in the Ullswater lake to soothe them.
When did I do it?... I did it on Easter Friday. I live 90 minutes away from the Lake District, so I set off early with "Heather and the Hounds" (check out her channel) and we got to Glencoyne for 8am. My gun time was 6 hours, but my moving time was only 5:01:06, so I must have been messing about with the Insta360 One X2 camera for a good hour haha. There was 2551 ft of elevation gain, which is pretty decent.
Why did I do it?... Firstly because I love the Lake District and Ullswater is the closest major lake to my house, but it is also the best in my opinion. I have walked sections of it before, but I have never done the whole low level route in one go and I really wanted to do that. Secondly it was good training for my first ultramarathon which I will be doing in June. I will be doing The Wall Ultra by Rate Race running events. So I need to get used to moving on my feet for long periods of time. As The Wall Ultramarathon is 69 miles following Hadrian's Wall from Carlisle to the Millennium Bridge in Newcastle upon Tyne. Finally, I will be doing my own fastpacking adventures going forward like fastpacking The Cumbria Way, The Cleveland Way, and the Weardale Way. So, it is good training for that too.
Would I change anything?... I took 2 litres of water which was only just enough. On hotter days I will need to carry more or to filter water on the go. Apart from that I took enough food which didn't cause any digestive distress, and I got my clothing just about right.
All in all, it was and excellent day, and thank you to Heather and our Dogs for been the support crew at Glencoyne car park.
