This kit was totally worth what I paid for it. I’m sorry for underestimating it at first. For novice firemakers this kit can provide a really easy, fun, confidence building experience. The two thunderheads and Egyptian bows that I’ll keep are alone worth the investment. They just work!
I should note that in most cases I needed to cut the notches back into the divots a bit more. Right out of the box many of the notches didn’t go into the fireboard divots at all, and some just barely. The only fails we had were for that reason – the dust would just collect on the top of the fireboard, not in the notch, and so an ember wouldn’t form.
This dual bow drill kit was only $19.50 on eBay (May, 2021). Give it a try. You might find that it opens up a whole world of fire-by-friction possibilities for you or some young person you are trying to teach.

P.S. I've read that the fireboard is Balsa. I still think the spindle is Poplar. I can't confirm either.
