Tennis Tactics - To be able to win more tennis matches, you need to have variety in your game. Technique is key, but you need to implement a number of different tactics to increase your chances of winning. Give yourself the opportunity to use your forehand more, target your opponents weakness, come into the net and volley more often, or force the opposition out of their comfort zone. These are just a few. There are many tactical plays in tennis and in this video, we will look at eight methods you can incorporate to more than double your chances of winning.
Tactic 1 - The V play. Use the wide serve (Slice, kick or flat) to open up the court and hit into the space with your second shot.
Tactic 2 - Earn the short ball. It is easy to over hit your forehands and backhands and try to force winners. Work the point. Build the point until you earn that short ball. A ball much more realistic for a finishing shot.
Tactic 3 - Exploiting angles. Take pace off the ball and add plenty of spin to work angles and open up space on the tennis court. You can do this on both forehands and backhands. Remember, the wider you are, the sharper the angle you will be able to find.
Tactic 4 - Take it early. Or take the ball on the rise. Doing this does require good timing, but if performed correctly, you will be able to take time away from your opponent and generate more effortless power.
Tactic 5 - Wrong footer. It is always the percentage play to hit into the space. However, go back behind your opponent at times in order to keep them guessing.
Tactic 6 - Approach play. Looking for an approach shot is a good way to end the point early. Make sure you don't over hit on this particular forehand/backhand, but maintain aggression. The better your approach is, the easier the volley will be.
Tactic 7 - Trade deep. Sometimes all you need to do is trade deep, stay in the point and wait for your opponent to make an unforced error. This is an effective tactic as you can aim down the middle of the court which makes it safe. Just ensure to maintain good depth on your shots.
Tactic 8 - Target the weakness. Use your strength on your opponents weakness. 'Nadal hitting to Federer's backhand' tactic is one of the main reasons behind his winning record against arguably the greatest tennis player of all time.
