In 1984, DC Comics granted Kenner Products the master toy license for their characters. Kenner's initial approach appeared to be heavily inspired by their popular Star Wars toy line, with plans for a range of playsets centered on iconic characters such as Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, the Teen Titans, Lois Lane, and the Super Jrs. Having secured the license from Knickerbocker and Mattel in 1982, Kenner focused on creating action figures with innovative features. Each figure was designed with hidden mechanisms that activated special actions when the character's legs or arms were squeezed, a nod to the emphasis on "action" in the toy market at the time.
This focus on highlighting each character’s unique "superpower" led to the creation of the toy line's name: *The Super Powers Collection*. Along with each figure, collectors received a mini-comic that featured an adventure spotlighting the character. Additionally, each toy package included a cut-out collector's card on the back, which added to the appeal for fans.
The line also featured characters from Jack Kirby's New Gods series, with villains like Darkseid chosen as the perfect adversaries for the heroes. Kirby himself received some of the few royalties of his career for redesigning his iconic characters for Kenner. Other notable creators, like artist George Pérez, earned royalties for his work on Cyborg and his redesign of Lex Luthor. Ed Hannigan had already revamped Brainiac’s appearance in Action Comics the previous year (1983). Many of the toy designs, as well as much of the packaging artwork, were inspired by José Luis García-López's classic DC Style Guides, with additional artwork contributed by Dick Giordano, who frequently inked García-López’s designs, and Mike DeCarlo. Box art for the line, with the exception of Shazam, was provided by Alex Saviuk.
Between 1984 and 1986, three series of figures and accessories were released. However, in February 1986, the line was abruptly discontinued. Two planned toys—an All-Terrain Trapper Vehicle and Darkseid’s Tower of Darkness playset—were never produced, despite being shown on the back of the third wave's packaging.
