Lake Vesuvius is not fully drained but is experiencing extremely low water levels due to ongoing dam gate valve maintenance, which initially caused it to be lowered significantly and then malfunctioned, preventing it from being fully closed. The Wayne National Forest is conducting this necessary repair, which includes lowering the lake 31 feet and closing the area to the public for safety. Visitors should be aware of the extremely low water levels and the closure of the boat launch for dredging this fall/winter.
Why the water is low
Maintenance is the primary cause: The low water level is due to essential maintenance on the dam's gate valve.
A malfunctioning valve: After an initial lowering for maintenance, the gate valve malfunctioned, remaining partially open and preventing the lake from being fully closed.
Public safety closure: The Wayne National Forest has closed the lake and recreation area to public access to ensure safety while the repairs are underway. #lake
