Busia District stands to lose over Shs300 million annually due to non-payment of royalties from gold mined in the area. As a result, the district council intends to take the central government to the Constitutional Court as the dispute over gold royalties escalates. Stephen Mugeni Wasike, the Busia District chairman, says he is taking the Attorney General to court after the mining regulation scrapped the payment of royalties on gold to local governments. Royalties are payments made to an asset owner by someone for the right to use their property.
